Community Music School
Discover, Learn and Enjoy Music
The RCCG Rock of Redemption Community Music School gives people an opportunity to learn musical instruments, develop their talents and experience the joy of making music with others. Our lessons combine practical teaching with creativity, discipline and teamwork. Whether someone is picking up an instrument for the first time or wants to improve existing skills, our aim is to provide an encouraging environment where every learner can grow in confidence.
Psalm 150:3–4 “Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe.”
What We Teach
Our music programme provides opportunities to learn different instruments, subject to tutor and equipment availability. These may include:
-
Keyboard and piano
-
Acoustic and electric guitar
-
Drum kit
-
African drums and percussion
-
Talking drum
-
Congas and hand drums
-
Other rhythm and percussion instruments
-
Group performance and basic music theory
Learners are introduced to important musical skills such as rhythm, timing, listening, coordination, improvisation and playing confidently with other musicians.
African Drumming
African drumming is an important part of our Music School. It allows learners to explore the rich rhythms, sounds and musical traditions of Africa. Participants learn how to hold and play different drums, understand rhythm patterns, listen to one another and perform as part of a group. Sessions may include talking drums, congas, hand drums and other traditional percussion instruments. African drumming is energetic, enjoyable and accessible. It also helps preserve cultural heritage while bringing people from different backgrounds together through music.
More Than Learning an Instrument
Learning music can positively support personal, social and educational development. It can help learners to:
-
Improve concentration and memory
-
Develop discipline and patience
-
Strengthen coordination and listening skills
-
Build confidence and self-expression
-
Develop creativity
-
Learn teamwork and cooperation
-
Form friendships with other learners
-
Experience different cultures and musical traditions
-
Prepare for performances and future musical opportunities
Who Can Join?
The Community Music School welcomes beginners and developing musicians of different ages and abilities.
No previous musical experience is required for beginner sessions. Lessons are delivered in a friendly and supportive way, allowing learners to develop at a suitable pace. Everyone is welcome, irrespective of religion, race, gender, disability or background. You do not need to be a member of RCCG Rock of Redemption to participate.
Inclusive Music Learning
We believe music should be accessible to everyone. Where possible, lessons and activities can be adjusted to support disabled learners and people with additional learning needs. Parents, carers and participants are encouraged to let us know about any support requirements when registering so that reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Perform and Grow
As learners develop, they may have opportunities to play with others, participate in group rehearsals and perform at community or church events. These experiences allow learners to practise in front of an audience, celebrate their progress and grow in confidence.
Psalm 33:3 “Sing to him a new song; play skilfully, and shout for joy.”
